Chain Gun is good because of its rapid shooting, but its charge rate makes it a little undesirable. Therefore upgrade it till the charge gets almost null. Plasma Rifle is another rapid-fire weapon suggested for newcomers. BFG 9000 shoots big and thus is better against a small enemy. And the Heavy Cannon has good damage capability that works smoothly.
