Salazar Slytherin left Hogwarts arguably because he disagreed with the other three members. According to records, he was a child of a pure-blood family who despised Muggles. And it was given as his sister Elianna and her newborn were murdered by one. So he was against taking them to the academy.
But his intentions were always subject to question, as many believe he softened towards Muggles and did nothing to students. And it was Godric who tarnished his reputation. Plus, half-bloods Tom Riddle and Severus Snape got accepted by him. But again, all changes from the perspective of readers.
He was in love with Helga Hufflepuff and tried to convince her to leave Hogwarts with him. She refused and after some time gave birth to Salazar’s child. Whose identity and relation to Voldemort gets revealed in the future.
