What Is Siphon In Fortnite?

Siphon caused quite a controversy within the Fortnite gaming community.

Fortnite is a popular battle royale game that constantly comes up with new stuff to liven things up for its players. Games Modes are a big part of this. Fortnite has seven core game modes but it often experiments with new ones. While some of them are a roaring success, others miss the rank. Siphon is one such Fortnite game mode. Let us take a look into what the mode entailed and why it was pulled from the non-competitive battle royale mode.

Siphon was a limited-time game mode that was introduced to the game in December 2018. As part of this game mode, players did not get any healing items in the game. The only way to revive health was to Siphon it by killing other players. Once a player killed an opponent, 50 health or shield was added to their existing health depending on the status of their health during the kill. If a player had low health, they got 50 health. If their health was not as low, they would get a shield instead.

This game mode was later introduced as a game mechanic. Similar to the Siphon game mode, this mechanic promoted more aggressive gameplay as players had to kill to get health, shield, or materials in the game. While it was intended only for competitive play, Fortnite briefly introduced the Siphon mechanics to regular game modes as well. However, it was quickly pulled back in v8.20. This caused a lot of uproar due to higher skillset players wanting the mode to be brought back.

Epic Games explained the decision by saying that while the highest-skilled 10% of the player base was more engaged after introducing Siphon, the majority 90% of the player base became less active. The vast majority of Fortnite players felt that the game became too intense to be enjoyable after the introduction of the Siphon mechanics. Moreover, players were constantly being pitted against opponents with higher skills as well as more health, shield, and materials.

Players that would like to experience the Siphon mechanics at work can still play Arena mode which includes this feature.
