Valheim Server – How To Set Up A Dedicated Or Local Server?

There is a way by which you can set up a dedicated or local Valheim Server. This will allow you to share your Nordic afterlife with your friends and go on some Viking-based adventures all over Valheim. If that is not enough to sell the concept, do remember that the monsters are pretty tough to beat on your own. So, any and all extra help is welcome.

How to set up a Dedicated or Local Valheim Server?

There are multiple methods by which you can set up a server in the game. These can be split into two specific methods. Let’s find out more below.

Local Server

  • To host a server you will have to create either a new world or choose an existing one.
  • Now, click on the ‘Start Server’ option.
  • The next step will ask you to create a password.
  • After this click on the ‘Start’ button and wait for the server to load.
  • Under the Join Game option, users can search for your Server name and then just enter the password to join.

Dedicated Valheim Server

First, make sure that you have a proper and powerful enough system that can handle the server load. You will also need a stable enough internet connection in order to host a server. Once you satisfy both these conditions, you will be ready to proceed to the next steps.

  • Download and install Steam on the system you’re going to use.
  • In the Steam Library search, make sure to switch on Tools and look for Valheim.
  • You will now be able to see something known as ‘Valheim Dedicated Server’.
  • Open this page and click on the Download option.
  • Once it has been installed successfully, you will have to look for the source folder.
  • There are two options at this point that you can use. This is either using an old world or creating a completely new one. I will explain both of these methods below.

How to use an Old World

  • This step can be skipped if you are hosting a server on the same system that you play the game on.
  • If not, go to C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\worlds.
  • Now, transfer the files from this folder to the system the server is on.
  • Keep the same path as the one on the older system.

How to create a New World Server in Valheim

  • If you have created a completely new world, you will have to follow these steps:
  • First, navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Valheim Dedicated Server.
  • Lok for a batch file that is titled ‘start_headless_server’.
  • Right-click on this and edit the file.
  • Look for something that reads “start valheim_server -nographics -batchmode -name X -port 2456 -world X -password X -public 1”.
  • You will have to edit the file in such a way that the ‘X’ in ‘name X‘ is the name of the server you want to host. Keep in mind, the X stands for the name of the save file of the server and not the server itself.
  • Next, you will have to also change the ‘X’ in ‘password X‘ such that it matches your server password.
  • Save this file and make a backup of the same file. This is because the game will reset the file every time it updates.
  • Another thing to note, if you want to keep your server open to the community, keep the numerical as ‘public 1‘. If not, change the numerical to 0.
  • Now, go to the system that is hosting the server.
  • Open Router Software and open the following ports: 2456-2458 TCP/UDP. Make sure the host port is 2456.
  • To start the server, double click on ‘start_headless_server’. Now, two windows will open, one with server logs and one to stop the server.
  • Your server is now active and running!
