Defense is part of your Pokemon’s base stats and IV. Apart from it, there are Attack, Stamina, and HP. The defense is how much defending power your Pokemon has or how less damage it will deal. So the better the defense, the less the damage. Base Stats are the same for every Pokemon of the same species, but their IV will be different. For now, there are only two methods that can influence IV of your Pokemon both positively and negatively. Trading and purification. Let us talk about them in detail. The first method of trading is exactly what it sounds like. You trade your Pokemon with your friend, and the system randomly increases or decreases the stats like the Attack and Defense of that Pokemon. You can do it for similar or even the same species of Pokemon. Even though it is a random method of influencing stats. Some theories claim that if the Pokemon you are trading has a high CP the chance of acquiring better stats increases. And if your friendship level with your trading partner is at the best friend level, it will also affect the stats positively.
The second method is purification. It does not influence your stats much. The influence can be positive as well as negative and it is only applicable to Shadow Pokemon. Apart form that, Defense stats mostly take negative effect. Now how can you purify your Pokemon? First, you are going to need some Candies and Stardust. You can collect these items by catching Pokemon of the same species, transferring them to Professor, walking, and so on. Required amounts might differ based on their species and other factors. So go to that Pokemons info page and check the required items beside the Purify button. And once you acquire the necessary amount, tap the Purify button to purify your Pokemon. Now click on the list-like icon on the bottom right corner and choose “Appraise“. You will see the difference in any of the one factor; Attack, Defense, HP, or all of them.
